When choosing a unique and distinct name for our new pedagogy that had no direct precursors world-wide we decided to take a cue from where the European ideal of erudition and education originated: ancient Greece. "aretai" means e.g. "virtue" and in pedagogy it stood for the humanistic ideal in education of the classical Greek philosophers and was originally at the roots of the humanistic ideals of the Prussian innovative minister of education and renowned scholar Wilhelm von Humboldt who inspired both German tertiary and secondary education. He believed in teaching all societal strata equally comprehensively. The foundations of our Arete pedagogy are laid down in our eponymous publication. |
